“AN ILLEGAL brothel is operating in rooms above Premier Nathan Rees’s Sydney electorate office.” (SMH 16/11/08)

Just when we thought we had Morris Iemma pegged as NSW’s most incompetent premier since, well, himself, it seems that ex-garbo Nathan Rees may clean up yet again.

In classic muckraking style, the SMH, obviously enjoying its recently acquired tabloid status, has revealed that Rees’ electoral office shares premises with an illegal brothel.

A member of Rees staff said in understatement yesterday, ‘it’s a little frustrating…’. Indeed it must be. While other constituents of the Toongabbie electorate are able to visit upstairs No. 166 for some rest and recreation, he and his electoral coworkers are stuck downstairs cataloging ‘How to Vote ‘ pamphlets.

Almost rivaling Picture magazine for accuracy, the Sun-Herald visited the illegal premises last week to obtain a quote/investigate. In the interests of reliable reporting, a second visit was deemed necessary the following day. One can imagine the jockeying for assignments at the Fairfax office.

While Rees seems to have unlimited power when it comes to legislating against squeegee attacks at traffic lights, he is apparently impotent when dealing with the issue of a brothel on his doorstep.

Perhaps he sought the advice of the Milky Bar Kid, who has agreed to keep ABC Learning Centres open until December 31. Word from the Blacktown Council is that the brothel issue won’t be heard in court until December.

Nascently astute Nathan perhaps recognises the need for a Christmas gift to visitors to his local office and is no doubt glad that the Tiantian enterprise upstairs is taking in laundry and ministering to the needs of his beleaguered constituents.

After a day on the trains to get to and from work, the least he can do is offer them a relaxing massage.
