Will Malcolm Play Ball?

April 8, 2010 · 4 Comments

Miranda Devine calls it the ‘perfect political synchronicity of a Premier Malcolm Turnbull’. Her article in SMH brings to the fore the notion that Malcolm Turnbull, having quit Federal politics, could quite happily slot into the top spot in NSW Liberal and therefore, without question relieve our beleaguered Premier of a task that is obviously beyond her experience. Barry O’Farrell has gone so far as to offer the seat of Vaucluse to the once federal leader.

While NSW would be happy with such a dovetailed solution to the State’s woes, it remains to be seen whether the business meister himself is as overjoyed with the idea. NSW clearly needs a leader who can govern effectively; a leader who understands finance, business, and hopefully has concerns about the environment; a man for all seasons, a 21st Century man. Turnbull ticks all of the boxes.

That he was inexperienced in the machinations of Federal politics should have been a plus for the voting public. Yet now we find ourselves, once again, the unwitting onlookers in a partisan squabble between two career politicians. That these aspirants have the nation’s best interests at heart isn’t in question. It’s their lack of runs on the board outside of Parliament that is the reason for our current malaise. A successful businessman prior to his entry into politics, Turnbull offered a different perspective in the Federal arena. It was resolutely rejected.

For the moment that is history. Miranda Divine’s proposition, supported by commenters across the board in newspaper forums, is a breath of fresh for the voters of NSW. Whether or not the renaissance man wants to play ball is another thing. One can only hope that NSW isn’t too small a playground for him.

Big Boys’ Toys

April 4, 2010 · 2 Comments

What is it with NSW Labor and fast cars? Rees did it with the V8 Supercars, Now it comes to light that failed former Premier Morris Iemma approved a new drag strip at Eastern Creek on a site previously set aside for much needed land fill. The land fill cost nothing, yet the Labor government happily paid $30 million startup costs for this privately owned venture, with the expected public cost to reach $150 million.

Shadow environment spokeswoman Catherine Cusack calls this affront, ‘…quintessential Labor – jobs for the boys, political donations, prime Sydney real estate, sod turnings in an election campaign – all encased by a brick wall of secrecy and denial.’

Having witnessed two premiers in the same number of years ousted from office, we are now faced with poster girl Keneally and her bid to appropriate the Grand Prix for NSW. According to The Age, most Victorians are begging us to take it.

Premier, fast cars won’t take our minds off slow trains. Infrastructure is more important than big boys’ toys. And a pretty face won’t hide the corrupt and inept government of which you are the figurehead.

The Sydney Morning Herald

December 9, 2009 · 4 Comments

This is the news, this is what smh.com.au dishes up to the populace? A Hollywood hell-raiser marries a bimbo, DJ quits radio station, mile-high club waitress makes the news again? The SMH has dipped lower than the Telegraph. If this is what the Herald has descended to, it’s a sad indictment of what used to be a stalwart news instrument.

Keneally Breaks Ground

December 8, 2009 · 2 Comments

She’s got to be joking. This is her cabinet? The men who have run the state into the ground? Roozendaal, Sartor, Della Bosca? These are the people who supposedly are going to inspire confidence in the NSW government? Sounds more like more of the same old, same old.

Keneally is not only dancing on strings, she’s now paying the piper.

Girl Talk

December 4, 2009 · 4 Comments

Interesting to see ‘girl talk’ back in the news. On Tuesday, Tony Abbott gave his deputy leader, Julie Bishop, a back handed compliment, saying, ‘she’s a loyal girl’. As he’s her third leader in less years I think it fair to say that her loyalty won’t necessarily be to him.

Kristina Keneally, latest Labor pollie on the NSW premier’s merry-go-round has said she isn’t ‘anybody’s girl’. Perhaps not, but I’d imagine she’ll stay loyal to the men who put her in the job, powerbrokers and enemies of the state, Joe Tripodi and Eddie Obeid.

While she may not be their girlfriend, with her experience consisting of two mishandled minor portfolios she certainly looks to be their puppet on a string.

Soundtrack suggestions:
‘We Won’t Get Fooled Again’ The Who
‘Puppet on a String’ Sandy Shaw
‘I’m Just A Girl’ No Doubt/Gwen Stefani

New Leaf for Licensing Laws

November 6, 2007 · Leave a Comment

CloverChampion lezzo pollie Clover Moore has taken time off from organising gay parades to stick the stilletto into bastard John Thorpe of the AHA. Thorpe is the bloke who reckons he ‘knows what Sydney wants’, that is, when we go out on the piss. Lipstick Lezzo Moore has called his bluff and sweet talked Iemma into letting Sydney have a glass of wine in a cafe, without, shock horror, ordering a 3 course meal.

Of course bastard Thorpe is livid, bursting Tooheys Old veins left right and all the way to Harbord. John_thorpe“Sydney doesn’t want to sit in quiet and peace and enjoy a drink and a chat.” No, he said, we want large barns, filled almost to capacity with pokies, then add lots and lots of TV screens, the bigger the better, all tuned to different channels, but all showing sport. Has he got his finger on the pulse or up his arse?

Hopefully this means I’ll be able to saunter down to my local Italian eatery on the occasional sunny Sydney afternoon, order a glass of vino, and shoot the breeze with other locals. As the restauranteur is making a bit from the grog, perhaps he’ll be amenable to hosting live music occasionally.  Salute!
