This week has seen a double whammy. Anglican priest Peter Adam has made some astounding claims regarding compensation for the indigenous. Not to be out-done, the NRL, never an organisation to shy away from the headlines, has provided further entertainment.
Melbourne Storm’s Greg Inglis has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Inglis was the NRL’s new poster boy. He replaced Brett Stewart, who has been charged with sexual assault. There isn’t much more to say about this on-going disgusting behaviour by NRL players. It’s happened before. I wrote about it here. It’ll happen again until the NRL starts to listen to public opinion, begins to respect society above their code, and refrains from treating their star players as ‘cannon fodder’ in the battle for the almighty dollar. And now to the priests. This news is especially disturbing. I suppose we can live with badly behaved footballers, but misguided clergy like this man are certainly not welcome in 21st Century society.
Reverend Peter Adam, principal of Ridley College, the main Anglican theological college in Victoria, reckons that we should ask the indigenous what they would like for compensation, and if we can’t pay it, we should leave Australia. All of us.
This is the man who is in charge of instructing the next generation of priests in the Anglican Church. This not only beggars belief, it causes the thinking person to wonder if there is any form of organised religion left to consider as an option.
In Australia, persons with one-eight aboriginal blood are regarded as indigenous. Reverend, based on this, how would you ascertain who went and who stayed? It’s not the logistics that are ludicrous, it’s the idea that any qualified clergyman could be thinking like this.
I am now as scared of the Anglicans as I am scared of the ‘couch jumpers’, the ‘towel heads’, and the Papists.
This has nothing to do with spirituality, it has everything to do with behemoth-like organisations that no longer have any relevance in the 21st Century.
Peter Adam’s call for a monetary apology to the indigenous is not only misguided, but also misappropriated. If anyone should say sorry it’s the footballers.
